CDR’s designs for the Heritage Bridge were inspired by Oklahoma’s unique Native American history and its prosperous agricultural industry. The intention was to integrate natural and historical elements into the design of the bridge in order to capture the rich and unique culture of Oklahoma. The bold two-tone Heritage Bridge colors are based on the natural colors found on the farmlands that frame this majestic bridge. The rich reddish-brown of the bridge beam is reminiscent of the warm Oklahoma soil and the parapet’s muted beige is similar to the natural vegetation. A woven pattern, reminiscent of indigenous belts, pottery and quilts, is incorporated into the parapet fascias and pier edges. Small accents of color were added by creating a natural indigenous stone pattern to emulate Central Arkansas Ledge Stone to fill the wing walls. Approaching the bridge, the dynamic central shield, which appears like a belt buckle atop the pier hammerhead, sharpens into the emblem from the state flag. Under the bridge, travelers see the woven pattern extends around the top of the pier and an interlaced basket pattern is stamped on the embankment.
